Pilates is the complete coordination of mind, body & spirit. - Joseph Pilates

Pilates is a system of exercises that offers efficiency through the path of least resistance. It’s a total body conditioning starting with the ‘stabilizer muscles’ (the little guys) that support your spine and keep your body balanced and mobile. We work to get your whole body moving by recruiting the muscles in a specific sequence. Pilates starts with the core muscles before firing up the big ones because that’s where your body starts when it moves. The exercises teach you awareness of breath and spinal alignment, and target the deep torso and abdominal muscles for core body stability.

Pilates is a path that leads you to a lighter, more energized body. With better protection against injury. Pilates is more than just another workout. It focuses on the use of the mind to control the muscles. You learn to breathe properly and to develop awareness about what’s going on in your body.  Pilates was created by Joseph Pilates who believed that the practice of living in a sound mind and sound body was the key to living a useful and happy life. Living this way itself, he said, could be an art.

At Line5 Pilates Studios, we offer both mat and equipment training under the guidance of certified instructors. Come join us in the art of living.

Joseph Pilates

The father of Pilates, Joseph Hubertus Pilates, was born a sickly child in Monchengladbach, Germany in 1883. His father was a prize-winning gymnast of Greek ancestry, his mother a naturopath. With a strong belief that modern lifestyle, bad posture and inefficient breathing lay at the roots of poor health, he designed a system of exercises to help overcome the effects of his childhood illnesses.

Joseph became an accomplished skier, studied body building, yoga, qigong, gymnastics and diving. By 14, he was modelling for anatomy charts. He called his system Contrology and first used it to train male soldiers and police officers. It was not until Joseph moved to America in the early 1900s that Pilates was adopted by women. When New York dancers discovered its rehab and fitness benefits, Pilates became a trend still widely popular among athletes and dancers almost a century later.

“I must be right. Never an aspirin. Never injured a day in my life.
The whole country, the whole world, should be doing my exercises. They’d be happier.” – Joseph Hubertus Pilates, 1965, at age 82
